How personalised sewing tuition helped Lilly gain confidence, develop her creativity and achieve a nationally recognised qualification.

For many home-educated young people, finding a recognised qualification that reflects their interests and abilities can be challenging.
For Lilly, textiles had always been something she loved.
She wanted to develop her sewing and textile skills further, but opportunities to gain a formal qualification in a subject she genuinely enjoyed were not always easy to find.
Lilly first began working with Rachel at In Stitches to develop her sewing and textile skills.
“When I started sewing lessons, I mainly wanted to learn more about textiles because I’d always enjoyed it and found it interesting. I wanted to develop my skills and learn more about something I loved.”
As Lilly continued her lessons, Rachel introduced the possibility of working towards an NCFE qualification through Technology Triumphs.
The opportunity to gain a recognised, GCSE-equivalent qualification in a subject she was passionate about was an exciting prospect.
“Once I found out that gaining a GCSE-equivalent qualification was possible, I really wanted to do it. It was a chance to build my skills and gain a qualification in something I genuinely love.”

Through the combination of personalised tutoring at In Stitches and the NCFE qualification delivered through Technology Triumphs,
Lilly has been able to combine practical textile skills with creative exploration and academic achievement.
One of the things Lilly values most is the flexibility of the qualification.
“I love how flexible the course is. You can work from home, have a tutor if you want one, and take as long as you need. You can focus on the areas that interest you most and explore different techniques and ideas that you genuinely care about.”
For Lilly, having Rachel's support throughout the course has made a significant difference.
“The experience evolved as we worked together. I enjoyed learning more and more because Rachel has so much experience in so many areas. I got to try lots of different things, and it made me love textiles even more.”

As Lilly's knowledge and practical skills have grown, so has her confidence in her own creative abilities.
A particular highlight for Lilly has been her sketchbook work, where she has been able to develop her own ideas while receiving guidance and support.
“I’m most proud of my sketchbook work. I’ve loved being able to develop my own ideas with the freedom to be creative while still having support and guidance.”
Rachel's approach has helped create an environment where Lilly feels comfortable experimenting, asking questions and developing her own creative voice.
“I love the way Rachel teaches. Nothing feels too pressured, and I’m never worried about making mistakes. She’s flexible and explains things in different ways until I understand. She brings so much enjoyment to the subject.”
The personalised support has allowed Lilly to explore a wide range of techniques and ideas while developing the skills needed to complete her qualification.
While gaining a recognised qualification has been an important part of Lilly's journey, the experience has given her much more than that.
Alongside developing her technical textile skills, Lilly has grown in confidence and become more confident in her own ideas and choices.
“I feel much more confident since starting. I’m more confident in my own ideas and in making choices about the things I enjoy.”
Her family have noticed the positive impact too.
My mum would probably say that the course has made me very happy, which it definitely has.”
For Rachel, one of the most rewarding aspects of tutoring is seeing students grow in confidence and independence while pursuing subjects they are genuinely passionate about.

A key part of Lilly's experience has been the supportive relationship she has developed with Rachel throughout her learning journey.
The individual support has helped Lilly feel comfortable taking creative risks, asking for help when needed and progressing at her own pace.
“I love the relationship that we have. It’s easy to build a connection because Rachel is so lovely and kind. She’s supportive, never judgemental and makes me feel happy and uplifted when we spend time together.”
Creating a positive and encouraging learning environment is an important part of the approach at In Stitches. The aim is to give each learner the support they need while allowing them the freedom to explore their own interests and creativity.
Lilly is enthusiastic about recommending both Rachel as a tutor and the NCFE qualification pathway to other students.
“I would recommend learning with Rachel 100%. The knowledge, flexibility and passion she brings make learning enjoyable. If I’m struggling, I know I can ask for help, and we’ll find another way of approaching it. I never feel silly for asking questions.”
She is equally positive about the qualification itself.
“I’d definitely recommend the qualification. It’s obvious that the people behind it love textiles too, and that passion encourages your own. The course gives you creative freedom and allows you to study in ways that genuinely interest you.”

Lilly's journey demonstrates what can happen when personalised tuition, a flexible qualification and a supportive learning environment come together.
She has developed practical textile skills, explored her creativity and gained confidence in her own abilities, while working towards a recognised qualification in a subject she genuinely loves.
“I’d really recommend all of this. It’s something I love, and I know a lot of other people would love it too.”
For home-educated learners, finding the right qualification can make a real difference.
Lilly's experience shows how learning can be both purposeful and enjoyable when a student is able to pursue a subject they are passionate about, with the right support around them.
